This oversized Phrenology Head made famous by L.N. Fowler is sure be a statement piece in your living space. Measuring a large 43cm in height with a lovely aged, crackle glazing this is a true investment piece.
These ceramic busts were made famous when leading phrenologist Lorenzo Niles Fowler created these as a learning tool for the study of phrenology under his company name L.N. Fowler & Co.
The study of phrenology was taken very seriously in the Victorian age, where it was believed the the different areas of the skull and therefore the brain were responsible for varying mental capabilities and personality traits. You will notice different regions on this bust relate to varying traits such as order, agreeableness, knowing faculties and friendship to name but a few.
A quote by Fowler is included on the rear of the phrenology head. It reads "For thirty years I have studied Crania and living heads from all parts of the world and have found in every instance that there is a perfect correspondence between the conformation of the healthy skull of an individual and his know characteristics. To make my observations available I have prepared a Bust of superior form and marked the divisions of the Organs in accordance with my researched and varied experiences."
These are a lovely reproduction piece with a vintage aesthetic. As such each head is different in marks, age effect and crackling of the glaze. What a unique piece to bring into your home!
